Culture tip

Streets Without Names

Most small streets in Japan have no names. Addresses go from big to small: city, area, then block and building numbers (like 1-2-3). So locals give directions by landmarks such as konbini, traffic lights and big buildings. A map app helps a lot.

“Directions in Japan often use landmarks like konbini and traffic lights instead of street names.”
